How To Change Oil On 2005 Kawasaki Vulcan 500
Description: This guide will show you how to change the oil on a 2005 Kawasaki Vulcan 500.
- New Oil Filter
- New Oil (10W-40 Recommended For Most Conditions)
- Wrench (to remove oil bolt)
- Oil Filter Wrench (not required, but helpful with tight oil filters)
- Tank to catch dirty oil (make sure to dispose of properly)
- Gloves (helps keeps hands clean and hot oil off of your skin)
Step 1: Run the motorcycle to warm up the oil. This will help drain the oil.
Step 2: Put your oil tank under the oil bolt to catch the oil when it starts draining.
Step 3: Loosen your oil bolt with your wrench until you are able to loosen the rest by hand(Righty Tighty, Left Loosy). Make sure that once the oil bolt is ready to be undone by hand that you have a good grip on it so when it is completely undone it does not fall into your oil tank. (Note: Some oil tanks have a grid on them so they will catch the oil bolt on top instead of allowing it to fall into the tank.)
Step 4: Once the oil is drained it is now time to remove to the oil filter. If you are able to you can do this by hand, if it is too tight then this is a great time you use a oil wrench (Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosy).
Step 5: When you go to put the new oil filter on put some of your new oil on the gasket and hand tighten the filter onto the motorcycle. (Note: It is recommended to take a clean towel or shop rag and remove as much of the excess dirty oil as possible from the oil filter area.)
Step 6: Put the oil drain plug back onto the motorcycle and torque the plug to 14.5ft-lb . Do not over tighten this bolt or you will find yourself having to replace the oil pan which is not a cheap or fun process.
Step 8: Look at the oil level viewer and determine if the correct amount of oil has been added (make sure while doing this that the motorcycle is level for an accurate reading). If it is above or below the markings add or remove oil to compensate.
Step 9: Once oil levels appear to be ok start the motorcycle and check for any leaks. You are now done!
